When studying a moral dilemma, Kohlberg was interested in understanding how an individual thinks about a particular dilemma instead of understanding the behavior which is associated with it.

Further explanation:

Kohlberg has discussed three stages of moral development in order to explain the cognitive development of an individual. The stages of moral development are Pre-conventional Stage, Conventional Stage, and Post-conventional Stage.

KOHLBERG’S STAGES OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT

Kohlberg believes that the moral development of an individual like cognitive development passes through a series of stages. Kohlberg has explained the conflict between an individual’s ideas about moral values. He used this idea to teach boys between the age of 10-16years about values and morality. The three stages given by Kohlberg are as follow:

1. In the pre-conventional stage, a sense of morality in a child is controlled by external factors. A child believes and accepts his parents and teachers. It involves obedience and punishment orientation and instrumental orientation.

2. In the conventional stage, a sense of morality in a child is tied to a societal and personal relationship. In this, a child believes the rules of parents and teachers but to maintain good relations and societal orders.

3. In the post-conventional stage, people believe that there are some laws in a society that are unjust so those laws should be eliminated or changed. This stage of cognitive development is marked by when an individual thinks that he has a separate entity and he may disobey unjust laws.
