The communists succeeded in overthrowing the Provisional Government in the November 1917 revolution because the Provisional government not only lost the faith and trust of the people of Russia, but they also lost the support of the army. On the other hand, the communists gained the support of the Russian people and this helped in overthrowing the Provisional government.
