The settlement movement was a movement of social reform that began at the beginning of 1880 that tried to diminish the social gap between rich and poor, its main objective was the establishment of settlement houses, in poor urban areas where middle class volunteers would live and work to share their knowledge and culture and reduce poverty in low-income areas.

The settlement houses provided services such as day care, education and health care services, to improve the quality of life of people with low incomes.
