In the story, The wife's story..How does the author use word choice to create suspense in the story?
Mademuasel [1]

Answer:

This short story retells a horrible event from the perspective of a wife. The entire tale is shrouded in mystery as the wife merely alludes to the event for the majority of the story, without spelling out what actually occurred. Her story begins with a description of her loving husband. She tells of how she first spotted him and how his gentility enticed her.

She extols his virtues as a husband and as a member of the community. He was a wonderful father, well liked and celebrated for his singing abilities. In her words, “He was purely good […] a hard worker and never lazy, and so big and fine-looking. Everybody looked up to him, [and] he had such a beautiful voice” (274). To his wife, he seemed perfect.

However, her account quickly takes a dark turn when she begins to discuss the event itself. She says that after the event, members of the community blamed the moon, claiming a connection between blood and the moon.

They said that it was something in her husband’s blood, just as it had been in his father’s blood. His father had disappeared some time ago, and for the first time she wondered about the nature of his fate. Before the event, she had started to notice that her husband would disappear some nights unexpectedly.

He would leave, making flimsy excuses for his absences. At these times, when he spoke, his voice would change and so would his demeanor. He would even smell different – disgusting – upon his return. This smell would linger for days even after he would bathe. One day, after returning, his daughter took notice of him and became afraid. The next time the moon changed, his wife finally saw what was happening. When he stood in the open, his fur fell away, revealing a pale, fleshy human where once a proud, handsome wolf had stood. After seeing this, his wife cried out, howling in fear.

Hearing her cries, the rest of the pack came and quickly hunted him down. As he lay dead, his wife watched his body, waiting for it to transform back into her husband, but instead his body remained motionless - a lifeless human body growing cold on the ground.

Write an essay explaining how actions can be more powerful than words.
katovenus [111]

A quote from Rashida Costa (365 Days Smarter) says: “... Actions are from the heart” What this excerpt can tell us is that the actions we commit in our daily lives are provoked by the heart and that the deepest parts of our most intimate desires will shine through in the outward surface of our physical being. As human beings we are capable of displaying more that 230 emotions like love, hate, anger, envy, etc. However, how do we display these emotions? Some good examples can be found in a trustworthy book that has survived for over 3.500 years. In the Bible we can see examples of men and woman who have showed us how “actions spoke louder than words”. Their examples among many others can show us what it means to be a family person, a friend, a lover and a sincere individual.

The biblical disposition of Ruth and Naomi related the story of an Israelite family who moved to the city of Moab. After many years of living in the city Naomi’s husband died and her sons married women from Moab. But, Naomi’s son’s died unexpectedly and due to this she decides to move back to Israel. However, Ruth her daughter in law followed her and begged her to let her stay with her and even cried: “Do not urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.” And not only did Ruth state these words with might but she was also loyal to them. After Naomi and Ruth moved to Israel Ruth tirelessly went out to the fields to search for food to provide her mother in law with and till the day of Naomi’s death Ruth was loyal and obedient to her like a daughter.

Some people may share the thoughts of author Francesco Petrarch who said “Love leads me on” others though may agree with play writer Vittorio Alfieri who mentioned: “For ‘Tis impossible hate to return with love”. These two historical quotes can have a large impact in our daily lives. Love and Hate are contradicting emotions that can affect our behavior towards people. They are not simply terms or definitions; love the same as hate impulses us to commit certain doings that can either benefit or damage both ourselves and the individual we have a relationship or connection with. For example: Due to the fact that Cain was angered and envious of his brother Abel he committed murder. Why? Because God put his favor over Abel due to the fact that he was a good and sincere man.

How can “actions speak louder than words” in today’s society? It would depend highly on the individual and the circumstances they are in. Some actions done under the influence of love, compassion, hate or sadness and can lead a person to have perplexed paths in life and gain different results. Some loving actions are found among relationships like the case of Hannah; a loving girlfriend who takes care of her partner Shane full time. The mere act of dedicating her time and energy to taking care of the person who she is closest to is a full act of devotion. In the channel SBSK Shane expresses in the video [An Interabled Love Story] “Our relationship is normal and exiting... we’re just a regular couple that has fun and gets into arguments and figures out life together” Later, Hannah adds “My love for Shane is definitely both physical and emotional. I love his personality. He’s a wonderful boyfriend” Another case is that of a 19 year old youth who risked getting emotionally involved with a disfigured 40 year old man, she expressed: “I remember having loved a man with a severe case of scoliosis. Did I ever tell that man I loved him? I did. Did I show it? More so. How? It’s very simple. When you do your best to figure out what is the Love Language your crush holds it’s easier to establish an emotional connection and therefore it gets the more harder to leave the relationship. I remember writing poems and love letters to my crush and physically express my love and physical attraction towards him. Even though our love didn’t last he knows that no words could describe all the love I felt for him because it was in the indirects and the small details where he figured that I truly was in love with him”.
