Some Cubans broke into the Peruvian Embassy to seek asylum due to the hardship. I couldn't stand to survive the hardship the economic downturn brought. So, when the Castro regime announced in April that all Cubans who wished to leave to the United States were free to go, I chose to leave. I had a sister who had moved and settled in Florida earlier. She arranged for me to come to her.

I boarded a small boat at the port of Mariel in Havana and arrived Florida the next day.
