Answer:

d. Sadness and a broken heart

Explanation:

When I was one-and-twenty

I heard a wise man say,

'Give crowns and pound and guineas

But not your heart away;

Give pearls away and rubies

But keep your fancy free.

' But I was one-and twenty,

No use to talk to me.

This line taled about the advice a wise man gave to a young man. He advise the young man in his early twenties not to fall in love. He said if he must give out a gift ,his heart should be intact

When I was one-and-twenty

I heard him say again,

'The heart out of the bosom

Was never given in vain;

'Tis paid with sighs a plenty

And sold for endless rue.

' And I am two-and-twenty,

And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

Now the young man is 22 years of age and has fallen in love. His heart has been broken and he realised that what the wise man told him was true. The word "sigh" shows sorrow and sadness .

which makes D a perfect answer.

In this passage, I assume the word in bold is "sighs." So the correct answer will be D. Sadness and a broken heart.

Connotation refers to the underlying meaning of a word. It is not the literal meaning. In this passage, the word "sigh" was used not literally but to express sadness and a broken heart.
