Androgeos, son of King Minos had been killed by King Aegeus's 50 nephews who hoped that King Minos would kill him for it and when King Minos heard of this, he asked Athens to provide him with someone special so that the person can be killed and he, Minos, placated.

By placing this passage at the beginning of the book, the author aimed to build suspense for the arrival of the little child at Troezen in the King's thoughts whom he did not want sacrificed.

This child turned out to be Theseus whom the Athenians revere as their founder.
