But Rolfe was one of the many English businessmen who saw the opportunity to undermine Spanish tobacco cultivation imports in the new Virginia colony and somehow obtained seeds from a special and popular strain that was grown in South America.

During his stay in Henricus, Pocahontas met John Rolfe and he fell in love with her. Widower Rolfe, who had cultivated a new variety of tobacco with some success in Virginia, married her on April 5, 1614, by Catholic marriage and Pocahontas was baptized with the name Rebecca Rolfe. On January 30, 1615, the son of John Rolfe and Pocahontas, named Thomas Rolfe, was born.

John Rolfe died in 1622 when his plantation was attacked by Native Americans.
