Primary producers! They get their energy directly from the sun through photosynthesis. All consumers lose some energy from the previous level through indigestible parts, such as plant root (or later bones)
In the interphase, they are really thin, just one strand which is only a few atoms wide (very challenging for an optical microscope and not too easy for the electronic one)
