An automobile engineer is redesigning a conical chamber that was originally specified to be 12 inches long with a circular base

of diameter 5.7 inches. In the new design, the chamber is scaled by a factor of 1.5. The volume of the original chamber is a.)102.02 b.)248.04 c.)306.06 d.)412.08 cubic inches. This is a.)242.47 b.)344.49 c.)432.16 d.)448.21 cubic inches less than the volume of the new chamber.

The problem asked us to solve the volume of a cone. Given that the height is h=12 and has a base of D=5.7 inches in diameter. To solve this we use the equation:
V=pi(D/2)^2(h/3) substitutiing, the answer is 102.07in^3
After scaling up the answer is 344.49in^3. This answer was derived by multiplying each dimension with the scaling factor of 1.5 then using the equation above to solve the volume.

If you are using Cosine and need to solve for an unknown hypotenuse, you should...
kifflom [539]

Using cosine, we can find the hypotenuse by using the formula below;

hypotenuse = adjacent / cos ∅

Trigonometric ratios:

 • Trigonometric ratios are ratios of sides of a right angled triangle.
 • The simplest ratios are cosine, sine and tangent.

Using cosine, the hypotenuse side can be solved as follows:

cosine ∅ = adjacent / hypotenuse

cross multiply

hypotenuse cos ∅ = adjacent

divide both sides by cos ∅

hypotenuse cos ∅ / cos ∅ = adjacent / cos ∅

Therefore,

hypotenuse = adjacent / cos ∅
