I've never read this but Im just guess out of nowhere. It seems as though the thing, or should I say the person, that is hurting Cole (where its intentional or not) may be Kyle as he had a reaction to that second question Beckett asked instead of the first, that too the 'glowing red eyes' which seems like a strong feeling. Not sure if its right, but as I said, Im just saying what I think.
