The expansion of railroad was a major boom in the economic growth in United States of America because it led to a high demand for steel, steel was largely needed for rails. This increase in demand therefore made the US economy to be on the rise.

Secondly when there is the creation of good roads in any country, you expect development to improve. This was the case of the railroad. Goods could not be moved from one area to another in western United States, when the railroad was not constructed, because at that time there was no Panama Canal after the creation of the railroad, there was a great movement of goods and services to other places in the US, thus improving the economy and improving development, in the US.

I think that the idea of Manifest Destiny of the US caused actions to be taken to oppose any signs of political or economic independence in its supposed 'back yard' in Latinamerica up to the more recent times. So such things as the support and fostering of the Contras by Reagan and the invasion of Panama by Bush were part and parcel of this policy. It is only now that many Latinamerican countries have insisted on having progressive governments that the US cannot just have carte blanche in organizations like the OAS and had to finally recognize the legitimate existence of the socialist government in Cuba in order not to become more isolated in that part of the world.

They would finally be kicked out in 1492. (Yes, Columbus got to sail for Spain only because they got their country back and because he promised riches.) Despite fighting for almost 700 years, their were great times of peace where Christians, Muslims, and Jews all lived and worked together. However, upon the the end of La Reconquista (The Reconquest) Christians removed anyone unwilling to convert or follow the Catholic faith. Things could be quite violent as the Spanish Inquisition was in use to root out anyone that was not a Catholic.
