I was going to say it originated from England because they called the saying in the 18th century but it originated from the French in the 15 century so

The breeding and trading of slaves also ensured that there would be enough workers to go around. White Southern slave owners usually had large plots of land, which they needed plenty of workers to help harvest, plant, and more. Slaves also worked inside the house, as maids or servants or butlers. I believe there were also a few who were taught to drive horse-drawn carriages and coaches, so that they may drive their owners around. Slaves were what gave the Southern community their money, food, and were the base-makers of clothing.
