In the last decades of the 19th century, the USA economy experienced high growth and industrialization. It became more global, with investments and trade links in a rising number of places in the world. This considerable growth of the country´s economic might forced a more active involvement in foreign affairs. American interests and their protection demanded it. The Spanish-American War that gave the US possession of new territories and the constant intevention in the affairs of the Caribbean, justified by the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine , are examples of this larger role in international relations.
