Ambas, mitosis y fisión binaria, implican un duplicado de material genético. El ADN se duplica y una copia va a cada célula hija. Lo mismo sucede con el resto del contenido celular. Finalmente ocurre citocinesis. Sin embargo, a diferencia de la bipartición, la <em>mitosis requiere de mecanismos mucho mas complejos de duplicación celular e involucra también a la cariocinesis, ausente en bacterias</em>.

La fisión binaria ocurre muy rápidamente, en un breve período de tiempo puede hallarse una diferencia considerable en la cantidad de células presentes en un sustrato, producto de esta división. Es por esto que el crecimiento que exhiben las bacterias como población, sigue un <em>modelo exponencial</em>.
