Mesopotamia is important because it is the first river valley civilization. ... Mesopotamia is significant for two reasons, one: It is the first civilization, and two: many important inventions and innovations were first introduced in the city states of Mesopotamia.

Writing, math, medicine, libraries, road networks, domesticated animals, spiked wheels, the zodiac, astronomy, looms, plows, the legal system, and even beer making and counting in 60s (kinda handy when telling time). These are just a few of the concepts and ideas invented in Mesopotamia that are used today.
