Hernando de Soto's expedition into North American began with his landing in Tampa Bay in 1539 with the goal of finding gold for the Spanish.
De Soto's expedition captured American Indian people to help them find gold for the Spanish. In their contacts with the native people, they were exposed to European illnesses which led to population loss. His expedition also ended up in armed conflict with native peoples creating more loss for the American Indians in the area.
