He was taken into custody and was charged with murder charges. People believed that he killed him due to racial intentions or racial hatred, eventually leading to a controversy.

The case was handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina, and the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.
