Ms. Flowers is the fascinating woman who motivates Maya's become interested in literature, and she does her best to help Maya overcome her muteness. Maya looks up to Ms. Flowers and finds her amazing. Ms Flowers, regardless of being black, stands her ground and requires respect from everyone around her, stating in such manner that equality is extremely important to her. Maya thinks that Ms. Flowers clever and open-hearted.
