People are often reluctant to get the help they need because they do not want to suffer the social stigma of being labeled with a disability. Unfortunately, social stigmas still affect both adults and children: People with disabilities are often not viewed as equals. Their physical and/or cognitive limitations cause some people and institutions to treat them as if they were inherently inferior. Such social stigmas indirectly keep children from getting the treatment they need by causing the parents, child, or both to conceal the fact that the child even has a disability.
