Why was claiming land in North America for Spain potentially controversial?

Conquering and defense is a major portion of history. From the discovery of the New World , many historical event took place. One among them is when Spain set out to encumber the western region which included the North, South and Central America. The main goal of Spain was to extract good and silver from the American region and to make Spain  a strong country and to increase its economy. But land claims by the Spanish were not fruitful. But with continued efforts Spain colonized North America . But their rule was not established as their aim for short term gain and they could not have control for long. This became controversial as the Spanish explores tend to seal the territories which belong to the native Americans.
