Answer:

<u>Awestruck- </u>a. In the next room, the door of which was open, I could see a magnificent glut dressing case, with some splendid diamond and ruby shirt studs lying by it, and a chest of drawers, and a cupboard apparently full of clothes. (The Notch On The Ax by William Makepeace Thackeray )

<em><u>Calm- </u></em>b. A hearty hand-clasp from Jack, a frank and smiling greeting from Polly (she looked handsomer than ever, Harold thought, with her lustrous black hair and soft, dark-gray eyes ), put him at his ease at one. ( The Emergency Men by George H. Jessop )

<em><u>Humorous-</u></em> c. By reason of my tender age (and there are some critics who, I hope will be satisfied by my acknowledging that I am a hundred and fifty-six next birthday ), I could not understand what was the meaning of this next excursion—this candle, this tool house, this bag of soot. ( On Being Found Out by William Makepeace Thackeray )

Explanation:

1. The excerpt from "The Notch on the Axe" by William Makepeace Thackeray shows an awestruck tone with the description of the room, the things the speaker can see inside the room. The depiction of the room with <em>"full of clothes, ...diamond and ruby.. and a chest full of drawers"</em> exudes an image of grandeur which will impress anyone.

2. George H. Jessop's "The Emergency Men" exudes a calm tone when he uses the words "<em>put him at his ease</em>".

3. William Thackeray's "On Being Found Out" is a humorous one for it is quite unbelievable and funny when the speaker talks of his age as <em>"</em><em>a hundred and fifty-six next birthday". </em>

Would newspapers be likely to write articles about a rebellion in a nearby country? Why or why not?
stiks02 [169]

Answer:

I don't think they would.

Explanation:

Say that the newspapers are in America. The newspapers would be unlikely to write about a rebellion in, say, Japan if it has nothing to do with America. Newspapers only report the news if it has something to do with America. You know those people who buy a newspaper everyday to read? Do you think they're going to waste their money buying a newspaper in America that talks about a rebellion in Japan? Those people don't care about what happens in Japan, because the rebellions don't effect them.

Of course, there are exceptions, like if those people had a relative living in Japan. However, I'm talking about the majority of people who buy newspapers. They want to know what's going on in America, not something that's happening in some other country they don't care about.

If the newspapers wrote about it, their sales would go down and they would lose money.

Unless the rebellion is related to America in some way, I don't think newspapers would write about it since they might lose money, writing about things irrelevant to America.

You must answer this question. You received an email from your new friend, Leela who has just enrolled in your school.
devlian [24]

Hello Leela!

I hope you are doing fine. It's a great idea to go to the beach with our schoolmates during the weekend.

We should go to Santa Barbara Beach. It is near us, and it is a very cool place. If we are planning on spending our day there, we should bring food, what about some sandwiches?. Also, we have to ask our schoolmates to bring a volleyball ball and a frisbee to have some good fun!

Can wait for the weekend!

See you.

Susan.

When writing an email to a friend:

  1. Greet the person in an informal style. For example, hello, hi, or hello (friend's name). Exclamation marks are allowed and make the letter more friendly and casual.
  2. Ask the reader how they are and give a short answer to the email. In this case, the short answer is, "It's a great idea to go to the beach with our schoolmates during the weekend."
  3. Answer the email questions (which beach and what to bring)
  4. Write a closure sentence expressing how you feel.
  5. Sign the letter.

To sum up, when we write an email to a friend, we should use a friendly and informal style. As regards the organization, first greet the friend, then make a brief introduction, next proceed to answer the questions in the body of the letter, and lastly, sign the email.
