Metabolism explains how the cells in the body use nutrients to meet its needs. Cells may start with small, simple compounds and

use them as building blocks to form larger, more complex structures (anabolism). These anabolic reactions involve doing work and so require energy. Alternatively, cells may break down large compounds into smaller ones (catabolism). Catabolic reactions usually release energy. Determine whether the following reactions are anabolic or catabolic.
1. Oxidation reaction
2. Muscle tissue breakdown -> release of amino acids
3. Adipose tissue formed from fatty acids
4. A-OH + H-B -> AB + HOH
5. AB + HOH -> A-OH + H-B
6. Beta oxidation of fatty acids
7. Gluconeogenesis
8. NADH+H2 -> NAD+

1. Catabolic

2. Catabolic

3. Anabolic

4. Anabolic

5. Catabolic

6. Catabolic

7. Anabolic

8. Anabolic

Explanation: Catabolic reactions are exothermic meaning they release alot of energy and electrons, whereas anabolic reactions are endothermic using up alot of energy for production and storage. Breaking down glucose to produce ATP is an example of a catabolic reaction. Using fatty acids and lipids to make adipose tissues is an example of an anabolic reaction, breaking down adipocytes for production of heat and ketone bodies is catabolic.

The top layer of the brain, responsible for higher-level mental processes, is __________.
romanna [79]

The top layer of the brain, responsible for higher-level mental processes, is the neocortex because the neocortex comprises the largest part of the cerebral cortex, which makes up approximately half of the volume of the human brain. It is responsible for the neuronal computations of awareness, thought, perception, and episodic memory.

Therefore, The neocortex is the top layer of the complex brain that commands higher functions related to the mental processes such as cognition, sensory perception, and emotion. Although the neocortex consists of neuronal cell bodies or grey matter and unmyelinated fibers that surround the deeper white matter in the cerebrum, that helps for higher-level mental processes.
