Does he just want her for her talent of being the best batter? His relationships with his peers that are boys are much more important to him at this time of his life. I perceive that when he did pick a couple of boys, they agreed TOGETHER that they should get the best batter. This way it was in the best efforts of the TEAM and not that a boy was picking a girl.
