Slaves escaping plantations in the American South first started going to Spanish Florida in the late 1600s when Spain granted freedom to fugitives who accepted to protect the Spanish crown. By the 1780s black fugitives started to form strategic alliances with the Seminole Indians, who had relocated from Georgia and Alabama, granted shelter and allowed fugitives to join their tribes.
