The primary motivation for Britain to control Suez Canal was due to the it's strategic location from where most of the trade between Great Britain and India passed.

Explanation:

Before the opening of the Suez Canal, ships from Britain would sail down towards Africa and up again to reach the Indian Subcontinent.

Thanks to the Suez canal, this journey was reduced by 2/3rds and cost almost halved.

However, the British became concerned about the power any country could wiled if it attempted to block this passage.

Eventually, the British moved in to protect this important trade route.
