Spanish methods of conversion were different from those of the French because Spanish used both the church and the system of labor to convert Native Americans. Furthermore, this conversion was a part of Catholic missions of The Spanish Missions in the Americas established by the Spanish Empire in the 16th to 19th centuries in regions ranging from Mexico and southwestern parts of current United States to the south in Argentina and Chile.

EXPLANATION:

Some facts should be considered while studying about this topic:

• The Spanish Missions or so-called Catholic missions were invested throughout the Americas to assimilate native communities as part of the European culture. The missionaries’ objective was to convert natives to Christianity since the dissemination of the Gospel is a Jesus Christ order important to monks.

• French mission or so-called Jesuit missions in North America started early in the 17th century, weakened at the early 18th, vanished during the conquest of the Society of Jesus around 1763, and got back around 1830 after the Society restoration. The missions were built as part of the colonial drive of France and Spain in the period, the "saving of souls" being the constitution’s complement of Nouvelle-France and early New Spain.

• The Jesuits in America used an approach which was fairly respectful of the Indians’ traditional way of life. It was different from the method of the Puritans in New England, who needed a conformism to their dress code and behavior. It was also different from the conversion method used by Spanish civilization that suppressed the Indian and English civilization despised the Indian. French civilization cherished and embraced the Indian.

• Jesuit missionaries acquired Indian languages and took Indian customs to the point of fitting them in, particularly when living among them. To obtain the Indians' conviction, the Jesuits dragged the similarities between Indian and Catholicism practices, creating connections to the symbolism of Catholicism and the mystical dimension, spreading religious medals as charms, and encouraging the benefits of the relics’ cult.

Critical Thinking question:
Elan Coil [88]

Answer:

Clark sees the Lakota people as savages not only because he considers their way of living as less developed than his own, but because the racist organization of the society was a requirement for the colonialist endeavor.

Explanation:

Although assimilation was the official government policy, the natives never really got the promised chance to preserve their way of life as long as they could adapt to new demands. The real goal was to take the natives' lands, and that could only be accomplished by spreading paternalistic and racist ideas such as the belief that the natives were savages.

Novay_Z [31]

Answer:

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement. First proposed by President John F. Kennedy, it survived strong opposition from southern members of Congress and was then signed into law by Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson. In subsequent years, Congress expanded the act and passed additional civil rights legislation such as the Voting Rights Act of 1964.
