They were angry as slavery could start in New Mexico and Southern California as a result of this war.

The Kansas-Nebraska act cancelled the Missouri Compromise and asked the states to decide themselves if they wanted to be a free state or a slave state. Conflicts rose between those supported and those who were against slavery and it led to a period of violence called "Bleeding Kansas". Stephen Douglas wanted to build railroad in the territory of Nebraska. All this led moral and political arguments.
