Hamilton and Jefferson had a rather unhappy relationship. They were both leaders of the two first political parties; the Federalists (Hamilton), and the Democratic Republicans (Jefferson). Washington writes about how Jefferson and Hamilton were always arguing about their contrasting views on the Constitution. Hamilton believed that the Constitution should be loosely interpreted, whilst giving the government that majority of the power. Jefferson believed the Constitution should be strictly interpreted, giving the states more power.
