*Chapter 1: George Milton and Lennie Smalls are introduced as the main characters. The two men are traveling along the road to a site of work. Background histories of the men and physical depictions are given. George talks about his American Dream and the farm both will own someday as they rest for the evening.
*Chapter 2: The men arrive at the designated ranch and meet an old farmer, Candy. Curley meets Lennie and George after the boss accepts their offers for work. He intimidates Lennie, then leaves after not receiving a fight. Candy explains Curley's past and how Curley's wife is a floozy woman to stay away from. Slim comes in with pups and Lennie takes one for his own keeping.
*Chapter 3: George tells Slim about the dream farm he has in mind for him and Lennie. Slim decides to join in on their idea, which Candy overhears eventually. Candy chooses to help out after Carlson shoots his old dog. Curley comes in and then leaves to find Slim, who he believes is fooling with his wife. Curley comes back empty handed and starts beating on Lennie, who crushes his hand in brute strength.
*Chapter 4: Lennie meets Crooks and the two talk while George and the gang head out to a brothel. Crooks is a black man who mindlessly warbles to Lennie about the hardships of loneliness and being Black. Lennie tells Croooks about the farm dream and at first, he doesn't see this working out, but then agrees to join in. The gang returns and Lennie admits to George about telling Crooks their plan

The 1st stanza "she walks in beauty like the night", is quite an unusual way of describing the beauty of this woman because night has a negative portrayal of emotion while beauty is always referenced to light or jovial emotions.
