Self-regulation, in a nutshell, prompts one to think carefully before acting. It encourages self-reflection and introspection so that one can act in good faith and maintain emotional balance. It also helps one to regulate emotions, actions, behavior and to be cognitive of any action from the self that could be harmful to one's goal in the long run.  

Self-regulation also encourages motivation and inspiration by oneself. It is very important for development as it teaches problem-solving, empathy, the ability to see challenges as opportunities, etc.
