Computers first performed simple calculations like adding, subtracting and multiplying. Computers changed to, for example allow data to be organized in spreadsheets like Excel that could be set up to do automatic mathematical functions on the data. Also, Word processing was developed with programs like Word to enable documents to be easily created and formatted in various ways. Both Excel and word processing were developed then to handle vast amounts of data and to enable more people to create documents not just secretaries. The wide availability of the internet has made it much easier for people to be informed on just about any topic and to communicate with people in almost any part of the world. The word processing software has meant any person can create documents so has become a valuable tool.
