An artist is creating a mosaic that cannot be larger than the space allotted which is 4 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The mosaic mu

st be at least 3 feet tall and 5 feet wide. The tiles in the mosaic have words written on them and the artist wants the words to all be horizontal in the final mosaic. The word tiles come in two sizes: The smaller tiles are 4 inches tall and 4 inches wide, while the large tiles are 6 inches tall and 12 inches wide. If the small tiles cost $3.50 each and the larger tiles cost $4.50 each, how many of each should be used to minimize the cost? What is the minimum cost?

<span>4 ft x 6 ft = 24 sq ft = 2160 sq in.
6 in. x 12 in. = 72 sq in.
(2160 sq in. / 72 sq in. = 30 large tiles.

30 large tiles to be used only.
The minimum cost is $</span>135.

Hope this helps.

Macario is making 12 pounds of nut mixture with macadamia nuts and almonds. Macadamia nuts cost $9 per pound and almonds cost $5
Fynjy0 [20]

Marcario should use  4 pounds of macadamia nuts and 8 pounds of almonds.

Explanation

given

cost of macadamia nuts per pound=$9

cost of almond nuts per pound=$5.25

cost of the mixture per pound=$6.5

total pounds of the mixture to be made=12

let the pounds of macadamia nuts=x

pounds of almond nuts=y

total pounds of nuts=x+y=12

x+y=12(1)\\9x+5.25y=6.5(x+y)\\\\9x+5.25y=6.5*12\\9x+5.25y=78(2)

solving (1) and (2)

x=4

y=8
