A theme is the author's main idea or message. The author usually wants to make sure that the reader is clear on the theme that he/she is trying to convey so he/she will hint at it many times in the writing. Romeo and Juliet have very strong themes around love and hate. Throughout the play, Shakespeare shows how the families hate each other by fighting in the streets and killing each other. Love is shown every time Romeo and Juliet are together or they talk to someone else about their love.
