In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire<span> and merged into the </span>Renaissance<span> and the Age of Discovery.</span>
It is difficult to define such a complex period of time as this, especially under one single name; however, in rough terms, modernity is a historical process that began in Italy during the Renaissance period, spread throughout Western Europe, grew in historical relevance with the Enlightenment and the industrial revolution, saw the darkest hour during both war worlds in the 20th century, and, for better or worse, is still relevant today in ethical and productive (labor) terms.
