Ulysses Frant siege of the city tried to force the starving of people and Confederated troops. The Confederates were entrenched in Vicksburg. Confederated General Pemberton had 30,000 soldiers entrenched but General Grant had 70,000 troops waiting to enter the city. It was just a matter of time to ware the people of Vicksburg down. Pemberton had to surrender to Grant on July 4, 1863.
