In the English language, <em>'bread' is </em>sometimes<em> </em>used to refer to food (sustenance) in general. By so doing the author, Atwood could easily portray her views in a clearer way to her readers.
So, in a sense, she tries to enlighten her readers not to forget the less fortunate in the society who may have no food but to share with them.
