For most terrestrial ecosystems, pyramids of numbers, biomass, and energy are essentially the same-they have a broad base and a

narrow top. The primary reason for this pattern is that Question 44 options: a. secondary consumers and top carnivores require less energy than producers. b. at each step, energy is lost from the system as a result of keeping the organisms alive. c. as matter passes through ecosystems, some of it is lost to the environment. d. biomagnification of toxic materials limits the secondary consumers and top carnivores. e. top carnivores and secondary consumers have a more general diet than primary producers.

Answer:

b. at each step, energy is lost from the system as a result of keeping the organisms alive

Explanation:

Generally Ecological pyramids helps to visualise  the structure of Ecosystem.Its diagrammatically showed  the relative amounts of numbers of organisms ,their energy, and  the amount of energy that is converted in living tissue  as usable mass (biomass) at different tropic levels.

Basically, large amount of energy is lost as energy flow from one tropic level to  another in an ecosystem. This can be explained with the second law of thermodynamics;<u>  </u><u>which states that in the conversion of energy from one form to another in a system, there is always a tendency towards disorderliness</u><u>.</u>That is the entropy changes  of  the universe   can never be negative.Relatively  in a biological system, this means that  energy is lost in metabolic process( glycolysis, chemeosmosis, assimilation, growth .......)  as heat, as organisms at one tropic level is consumed  by another at the next level, from the base to the peak of  these pyramids.

The amount of energy transfer efficiency  among the two successive tropic levels is obtained by <u>dividing the energy transfer at present tropic level</u> with<u> the energy transfer at previous tropic levels</u> and<u> mutiply the results by 100%</u> . This known  as Tropic level transfer efficiency(TLTE) .

The lower energy efficiency between successful  present and previous tropic levels  in these pyramids accounts for  the similarities.

Select ALL the correct answers.
tekilochka [14]

Answer:

(b) The interquartile range of B is greater than the interquartile range of A.

(d) The median of A is the same as the median of B.

Explanation:

Given

A = \{1, 4, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1\}

10th\ run = 9

So:

B = \{1, 4, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1,9\}

Required

Select all true statements

(a) & (d) Median Comparisons

A = \{1, 4, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1\}                         B = \{1, 4, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1,9\}

n = 9                                                         n = 10

Arrange the data:

A = \{1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2,  2,3, 4\}               B = \{1,1,1,1,2,2,2,3,4,9\}

                               Median = \frac{n + 1}{2}th

Median = \frac{9 + 1}{2}th                            Median = \frac{10 + 1}{2}th

Median = \frac{10}{2}th                              Median = \frac{11}{2}th

Median = 5th                                 Median = 5.5}th --- average of 5th and 6th

Median = 2                                    Median = \frac{2+2}{2} = 2

Option (d) is correct because both have a median of: 2

(b) & (c) Interquartile Range Comparisons

A = \{1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2,  2,3, 4\}               B = \{1,1,1,1,2,2,2,3,4,9\}

n = 9                                                         n = 10

First, calculate the lower quartile (Q1)

Q_1 = \frac{n + 1}{4}th[Odd n]             Q_1 = \frac{n}{4}th [Even n]

Q_1 = \frac{9 + 1}{4}th                            Q_1 = \frac{10}{4}th

Q_1 = \frac{10}{4}th                              Q_1 = 2.5

Q_1 = 2.5th

This means that:

Q_1 = 2nd + 0.5(3rd - 2nd)              Q_1 = 2nd + 0.5(3rd - 2nd)

Q_1 = 1 + 0.5(1- 1)                   Q_1 = 1+ 0.5(1 - 1)

Q_1 = 1                                       Q_1 = 1

Next, calculate the upper quartile (Q3)

Q_3 = \frac{3}{4}(n + 1)th [Odd n]             Q_3 = \frac{3}{4}(n)th [Even n]

Q_3 = \frac{3}{4}(9 + 1)th                            Q_3 = \frac{30}{4}th

Q_3 = \frac{30}{4}th                                     Q_3 = 7.5th

Q_3 = 7.5th

This means that:

Q_3 = 7th + 0.5(8th- 7th)           Q_3 = 7th + 0.5(8th- 7th)

Q_3 = 2 + 0.5(3- 2)                       Q_3 = 2+ 0.5(4 - 2)

Q_3 = 2.5                                       Q_3 = 3

The interquartile range is  IQR = Q_3 - Q_1

So, we have:

IQR = 2.5 - 1                  IQR = 3 - 1

IQR = 1.5                       IQR  =2

(b) is true because B has a greater IQR than A

(e) This is false because some spread measures (which include quartiles and the interquartile range) changed when the 10th data is included.

The upper quartile and the interquartile range of A and B are not equal

How do sediment properties (porosity &amp; permeability) affect how groundwater movement occurs?
padilas [110]

Answer:

Grain size, sorting and shape of particles in sediment or rock can influence how much empty space is available to store water (porosity) and the ability of groundwater to move through the material (permeability). Aquifers are water-bearing formations with good porosity and permeability and are important groundwater resources.

What is digestion? Starting from mouth, state the various steps involved in digestion <br>
Sladkaya [172]
Mouth. Food starts to move through your GI tract when you eat. When you swallow, your tongue pushes the food into your throat. A small flap of tissue, called the epiglottis, folds over your windpipe to prevent choking and the food passes into your esophagus.

Esophagus. Once you begin swallowing, the process becomes automatic. Your brain signals the muscles of the esophagus and peristalsis begins.

Lower esophageal sphincter. When food reaches the end of your esophagus, a ringlike muscle—called the lower esophageal sphincter —relaxes and lets food pass into your stomach. This sphincter usually stays closed to keep what’s in your stomach from flowing back into your esophagus.

Stomach. After food enters your stomach, the stomach muscles mix the food and liquid with digestive juices. The stomach slowly empties its contents, called chyme, into your small intestine.

Small intestine. The muscles of the small intestine mix food with digestive juices from the pancreas, liver, and intestine, and push the mixture forward for further digestion. The walls of the small intestine absorb water and the digested nutrients into your bloodstream. As peristalsis continues, the waste products of the digestive process move into the large intestine.

Large intestine. Waste products from the digestive process include undigested parts of food, fluid, and older cells from the lining of your GI tract. The large intestine absorbs water and changes the waste from liquid into stool. Peristalsis helps move the stool into your rectum.

Rectum. The lower end of your large intestine, the rectum, stores stool until it pushes stool out of your anus during a bowel movement

➷ The correct answer would be D. Products of one process are used as some of the reactants for the other processes.

As you may know, the formula for photosynthesis is:

carbon dioxide + water ==> oxygen + glucose

And the formula for respiration is:

oxygen + glucose ==> carbon dioxide + water

The reactants for one are the products for the other and vice versa. This is why it would be the correct option.
