The League of Nations was an attempt to put into practice an ideal that would lead to world peace and no more wars, but unfortunately, it was born with several important shortcomings. Unlike today´s United Nations, it did not have any means to enforce its resolutions, and some key nations did not join the organization; this is the case of the United States, whose Senate refused to ratify the adhesion to the organization.
Women turned their attention to the world outside the home. Thousands of women in the North and South joined volunteer brigades and signed up to work as nurses.
