In some cases memorization is important for some subjects that involve how a process works. Many undergraduate studies will encourage memorization in tests for this reason but it is also important to exercise application.  Some additional tips for studying other than simple memorization are:

1. Do practice questions at the end of the chapter

2. Read additional material that is not a part of the class notes but is relevant to the chapter

3. Write a paragraph on all the the points that you picked up and cross check this with your notes

4. Engage in a discussion with people in the field to have a deeper knowledge or just a different perspective

IN conjunction with memorization and study groups these suggestions will greatly boost one's study strategies.
