I think the mood in the excerpt is shocked and somber. 

They people are shocked by the swiftness of the sickness. They did not anticipate the grim outcome.  This is because the patient is very young and should have a stronger immune system and she has been sick for only a few days.

"She had been sick only a few days. No one expected her to die."

If my memory is correct... Odysseus had to get away from the Cyclops, so logically, wouldn't it be diligence, since he is trying to figure out how to get away from the Cyclops? I'm sorry if this isn't the best answer, I remember that my class covered Odysseus, but can't remember which grade I was in.
