Many events of significance took place in 1949, the year being talked about including North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Soviet detonation of the Atomic Bomb.

Explanation:

The Communist party took over china after a long drawn conflict from 1945 to 1949 where they came out and became victorious and Mao Zedong took over as the leader of the country

This is also the time when North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established making US a powerhouse in trade for the next few decades.

Soviet Union also was able to detonate its first nuclear bomb, being the first nation after US to do it. .

Israel  was admitted into U.N giving it official status as a nation. It had gained independence the year prior.
