Christians built catacombs because... They didn't believe in cremation and weren't allowed to practice their religion openly. Th

e heat from being above ground made the bodies smell and it is cooler underground. Christians were ashamed of their religion so they hid underground. Because the Bible told them to bury their dead in the earth to help them 'return to dust'.
