Rivers linked the Byzantines to the Russians. Trade occurred between the two cultures, so the Russians got supplies and ideas they would not have otherwise gotten.Trade brought Kiev into the Byzantine's influence. Also, the Byzantines had a strong hand in the Eastern Orthodox church, which converted Slavs via missionaries.
