Trade occurred between the two cultures, so the Russians got supplies and ideas they would not have otherwise gotten.Trade brought Kiev into the Byzantine's influence. Also, the Byzantines had a strong hand in the Eastern Orthodox church, which converted Slavs via missionaries.</span>

Also Khruschev put a nuclear weapons site in Cuba, this meant that they were now within range of the US therefore giving them an advantage in the arms race.
