The taste receptor cells are the sensory cells that are present on the tongue. These cells are bundled in taste buds.

<u>EXPLANATION:</u>

The receptor cells taste an item and the sensation of taste is then passed to the brain. Taste buds have papillae that sense the taste.

The various taste sensations that the taste buds can feel include sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. On the taste bud, not all receptor cells sense the same taste i.e. some cells may bear sweet taste while others may bear another taste.

The tongue is covered with papillae (a), which contain taste buds (b and c). Within the taste buds are specialized taste cells (d) that respond to chemical stimuli dissolved in the saliva and, in turn, activate sensory nerve fibers in the facial and glossopharyngeal nerves.
