We have that both poems were epic poems from the line of Sanskrit civilization that developed roughly in the area of ancient India. They are 2 of the longest poems in world history and they have not only tales but also philosophical comments, advice and thus they play an important role in Hinduism; that is so because the deities of Hinduism are involved in the story arc of both poems.
