Gold, quartz, and calcite are all examples of minerals. Minerals represent a naturally occuring chemical compound, specific for its crystalline form and is in no way produced by life processes, it is exclusively geological process.
The coal on the other hand is formed by both biological and geological processes. The biological are the basis, while the geological are taking millions of years on top of it so that we get the final product. The coal represents a fossil fuel that forms from dead plant matter has been converted into peat, later converted into lignite, after that sub-bituminous coal, bituminous coal, and at the end anthracite.
