They both wanted their respective countries to be more 'western' oriented. They are both probably rotating in their graves when they see what has happened.
Both were Muslims but believed in the separation of state and religion.
USA pulled the rug from under the Shah's feet because he was trying to gain influence in the area, which wasn't on the USA's agenda.
Ataturk had no extra-territorial aspirations, he wanted restore Turkey's pride in the country after the fall of the Ottoman empire.
