Illegitimate opportunity structures were explained by Cowan and Ohlin. In the criminal structure, the youth learn how to attempt crime to gain a materialistic structure. The subculture is the area where an environment is created in which youth attempt their crime. Youth get an opportunity to conduct a crime to satisfy their material structure.

In this environment, youth start to make a gang so that they can satisfy their needs and attempt a crime. They release their stress in this form so that they can make themselves satisfied. Thus youngsters living in Ghetto are unlikely to be wealthy through Harvard University but satisfy their material needs they attempt an illegitimate opportunity structure crimes.
