Answer:

They both wanted to control parts of America for its natural resources. This caused a fight between the countries for areas in strategic positions, such as good farmland or areas near rivers for trading. In the end, both countries fought over land because they believed, through mercantilism, that the more land you have the richer you are.

I don't know exactly what your looking for but, it could do with religion or different ideas of the country. 

For example: Let's say that America goes to war with Russia and the Americans didn't want to go to war. The people have a differed idea from the government, meaning that the military does not have the peoples support.
